Portable Power Pack |
When you want to extend the use of your Human Power Generator or Human Power Trainer beyond DC (direct current), the Portable Power Pack is the answer. To operate standard 120 Volt AC lights and appliances, plug directly into the outlet on the Portable Power System.
The Portable Power Pack includes storage battery, a 320 watt inverter (640W peak surge power), LED battery voltage readout, battery charge status display as well as a variety of available connecting cables. There are two 120 Volt AC outlets allowing you to plug your standard AC lights or appliances with a rating of 320 Watts or less, into the Portable Power Pack outlet. There are also separate DC outputs. To keep your system charged, simply connect a Human Power Generator or Human Power Trainer to the Portable Power Pack, and pedal...it's the same way you would recharge an ordinary battery, except you provide the power!
Whether you are using the Human Power Generator or the Human Power Trainer, it is important to understand the capacity of the battery versus how quickly the average person can charge the system. Windstream’s Portable Power Pack is primarily designed to be charged by human power though, it can also be charged from a wall outlet using an AC charger or with your car, using a DC charging cable.
CALCULATIONS: The Portable Power Pack houses a 12-volt deep cycle battery. This battery has 22 amp hours of capacity. Absolute capacity (watt hours) is calculated using the first equation above. Therefore, the Portable Power Pack has approximately 300 watt hours of available power.
If you are using the Human Power Generator, it is likely that you will be charging the battery at an average of 5 to 8 amps. At this rate, it will take between 3 and 4 hours to charge a fully discharged battery.
If you are using the Human Power Trainer, it is likely that you will be charging at an average of 14 amps. Using the above formula, it will take about 2 hours to fully charge the battery.
It is possible to charge the Power Pack with two Human Power Generators or Trainers as there are two inputs. It is also possible to charge the Power Pack and draw from the battery at the same time. This Power Pack is not voltage regulated, therefore it is important to monitor the level of charge so as not to overhcharge the battery and damage it. It is easy to monitor as there are two voltage indicators - an LED strip that tells you in real-time, the voltage that is being sent to the battery as well as a display in % that indicates the level of charge. If you are using an AC applicance that has been plugged into the inverter outlet, the display will also tell you how much power (Watts) is being drawn at any given moment.
