Human Power Trainer
Human Power Trainer If you are a cyclist, you know the value of winter training. But, do you know the value of your exertion? Your energy is being turned into heat by your trainer. Recapture your energy! The Human Power Trainer is the answer.

The Human Power Trainer consists of a powdercoated steel trainer frame holding a permanent magnet DC generator. Your bicycle (typical adult 27inch wheel diameter) is mounted securely to this frame and the rear tire is positioned to turn the friction drum that has been custom fit over the generator shaft. The amount of electrical power that can be generated by the Human Power Trainer is determined by the energy available from pedaling the bicycle. The stronger the user, the higher the production of electrical power. It is also recommended that the tire is smooth rather than nubby like a mountain bike tire. A smooth tire makes for better contact. Also, the tire should be very well inflated for maximum contact and efficiency.

How much power can a cyclist expect to produce from the Human Power Trainer? The best Tour De France cyclists can produce about 300 watts sustainably and for short peaks, of up to about 600 watts. With that as perspective, the average person can expect to produce 100 -150 watts sustainably. To achieve this, the Human Power Trainer has been designed with a generator capable of sustaining 20 Amps of current. When used to charge a 12 Volt battery, this produces a maximum power output of 300 Watts at 15 Volts or a little less than one half horsepower (One horsepower is equal to 746 Watts). This does not mean that you cannot produce more than 300 watts, it just means you won’t be able to do it for long periods of time.

While it is possible to directly power some DC appliances such as water pumps, the Human Power Trainer is primarily designed to charge a deep cycle, 12-Volt battery or to contribute to a 12 Volt battery bank. Most household appliances require alternating current (AC) which requires a DC to AC inverter (see our Portable Power Pack). Certain DC appliances, such as DC lights, can be powered directly, but it is important to observe maximum voltage ratings to avoid damaging these appliances. It is usually necessary to use a voltage regulator or carefully monitor output with a voltmeter or multimeter. These generators have a variable and not constant output.

If you already have a trainer or want to build your own stand, the Human Power Trainer Module consists of the generator, bearings, and friction wheel only and are conveniently mounted on a steel bracket. The Human Power Module sells for $495.00. We have modified a Minoura Mag 850 Trainer. As long as your trainer stand is of a similiar design and alignment, it is likely that the module could be adapted.

If the Human Power Trainer is purchased on its own without a Power Pack, it automatically comes with a heavy duty diode- protected connecting cable. You can choose the kind of wire termination that suits your application. The most universal cable uses plier - style clips to attach directly to the battery posts. The diode is built into a small in-line aluminium box and prevents reverse current from traveling back from the battery to the generator.

SAVE $45 when you buy the Human Power Trainer together with the Portable Power Pack.
