Watchtower
Elizabeth A. Lynn
World Fantasy 1980

At one point, a character says, "Women are to fuck and to bear men's children. They are not supposed to command." Countering sexist attitudes and pioneering a paradigm of equality may represent the main literary value of The Watchtower.

As far as the story though, it falls flat. The plot is predictable, the characterizations shallow, and suspense almost completely missing. The cadence borders on monotonous: da,da,da... da,da,da... da,da,da... For pages on end, sentence length barely varies.

On the other hand, highly respected authors like Theodore Sturgeon, Robert Silverberg, Vonda McIntyre, and John Varley thought this book is great (see discussion). Maybe I'm just off the wall on this one; or possibly, it's more of a period book than most, more applicable to 1979 than 1998.
